Artist Statement

My work is rooted in an appreciation for the quiet beauty of nature and the emotional responses it evokes. I use brushstrokes that capture the movement in my pieces from the changing clouds to swaying leaves in the wind. I am drawn to how landscapes carry a sense of nostalgia and connection between people from everywhere. To me, these scenes show that while people may not always be together, they can see the beauty of the world together. One person may stumble upon the same scene another discovered years ago, but in the end, they are connected beneath the same sky.

Acrylic paint is central to my process because of its versatility and ability to build layered surfaces. I use thin washes and textured brushwork to capture the wonders of nature. I aim to use colors that can be found in the real world rather than distort the natural scenes. I pin one main subject in my piece to emphasize isolation or quietness. Whether it is one house or one window, they highlight the solitude people may feel, but at the same time, the beauty that surrounds the lonely item shows how breathtaking the world actually is. I am intrigued by the paths walked by man and even animals, each of us on our own unique but so often shared journey. I want people to recognize that while it may feel lonely sometimes, that everybody is truly connected by nature as there is always nature surrounding them.

Travel has played an important role in shaping the environments I depict. I often travel with my family and have witnessed the duality of nature and its different features from the snowy mountains of Switzerland to the warm beaches in Costa Rica. Rather than portraying these places with strict realism, I focus on their mood: the calm of open spaces or the stillness of early morning light. Lately, I have attempted to paint cityscapes as well that show busy streets and shops, while continuing to show isolation by highlighting abandoned streets with no person in sight. While cityscapes show less nature, I still attempt to create beautiful skies that play with my theme of the interconnectedness of nature.

Throughout the portfolio, my goal is to create work that encourages slow looking. I want viewers to sense the quiet tension between detail and simplicity. Most importantly, I hope to offer spaces that capture the beauty of the natural world, the memories we attach to it, and the connection that it establishes between all.
